Are you new to the hobby? If you're considering becoming a Civil War Reenactor and would like to do it as authentically as possible, we've written an article just for you! What are these terms all about? It seems there are about as many definitions for the words [hardcore/progressive/authentics/campaigners/mainstreamers] as there are reenactors. No one can seem to agree. Some folks wear the name "hardcore" like a badge of courage, others in perceivably the same movment despise the word. You'll find an FAQ below that attempts to describe these terms. For the purposes of this website I have made an attempt at defining a couple terms as well. These terms and their definitions won't be agreed on by all... it is simply my own view on the matter. Defining Authentic Reenacting: Authentic Reenacting should be defined as a continuing effort, based primarily on research, to improve one's impression so that they might more closely resemble a true soldier of the War Between the States. Defining Campaign Style Reenacting: Campaign Style Reenacting should be defined as an effort to more closely resemble soldiers as they would have appeared in the field and on the march. One Final Note: These definitions should be and will be abridged when necessary to offer a more concise and true description of these aspects of Reenacting. 4/18/00 - An Attempt at Defining the Terms: Authentic, Hardcore, Progressive, Mainstreamer, Farb and Campaigner by Paul Calloway of the Tar Water Mess Some Questions you may be asking yourself:
You may be asking yourself, "Why would I want to be a Hardcore?"We believe civil war reenacting is a big enough hobby for both mainstream and progressive reenactors. Most of us started out in the mainstream but at some point made a conscious decision to try to be more authentic. So we've been where you may be at now. As in most hobbies, Civil War Reenacting allows you to just fit in or to be on the cutting edge. Authentic Campaigners feel that they are on the cutting edge and furthermore feel that their research and efforts will eventually bleed its way into the mainstream. It's still a choice. Please stay and look around. More articles will be posted here in the future to discuss this issue. Aren't Hardcores all Jerks? There are a few Hardcores that are jerks - and they make mistakes just like the rest of the world. But it's important to remember that they offer a lot to the hobby. Don't villanize them for the sake of a few - remember that it is their research and their dedication to doing it right that has brought this hobby to the point where it is at now. If you've never spent time with "hardcores" or have had bad experiences in the past with them, I encourage you to join our email listserv and listen in for awhile. I think you'll find that they are good folks with an incredible desire to provide as accurate an impression as possible. Send me an email if you would like to be involved in our "Authentics Discussion." Isn't it Terribly Expensive? It's not as expensive as you might think. There's a lot of misinformation being spread about how much it costs to put together an authentic impression together. Read our article on this subject. If you want to know how you can put a more authentic impression together without a ridiculous expenditure, I suggest you frequent our articles, discussion boards, and subscribe to our listserv by sending me an email.
