Rose of El-A-Noy Minstrels

Authentic Civil War Period String Band

Dear Folks,

Greetings! And thank you for you interest in the Rose of El-A-Noy Minstrels. We truly appreciate your support of our efforts at historical music preservation. Since the "Campfire Companion" songbook was first released in 1985 during the filing of "North & South, Book II", our historical music contributions have expanded to six cassette tapes and two songbooks. You will find over 100 period songs in our offerings. You may find us at Interpretive Programs, Period Military Balls or just around the campfire at a Civil War Reenactment.

Period Music Recordings:

We are all current and participating Civil War Reenactors. When not on stage, you will find us in the ranks. These recordings all utilize natural acoustic instruments performed in a period style of playing. Vocals and harmonies are included on most recordings. The price per tape is $9.95 ppd, or $9.00 per tape when three or more are ordered. The "Great Rebellion" Songbook is $6.95.

A Hard Road to Travel

Volume 1, copyright 1987, 60 minutes
This recording is a sampler of songs popular during the Civil War Period. There is a mixture of patriotics, sentimentals, minstrel black-face sentimentals, minstrel black-face, and dance tunes. This is the first recording by the original, three-member Rose; Dan Cheatum, Bob Chamberlin and Ted Mueller. It basically is a live recording and, as such, a bit on the primitive side. It includes period instrumentation of finger-style guitar, clawhammer/minstrel style banjo, fiddle, bones harmonical & vocals.

Pat Murphy of the Irish Brigade ~ El-A-Noy ~ Old Rosin The Beau ~ Weeping, Sad & Lonely ~ Jenny Get Your Hoecake Done ~ Year of Jubilo ~ Darlin' Nelly Gray ~ Richmond's a Hard Road to Travel ~ Billy Barlow ~ All Quiet Along the Potomac ~ Liberty ~ Tenting Tonite On the old Campground ~ Ring, Ring de Banjo.

Dixie's Land

Volume 2, copyright 1991, 60 minutes
A mixture of types of songs popular during the early 1860's. Here we have recorded common songs known around the campfires or on the march by soldiers both North and South. The Civil War tradition was rich in songs new and old. Thee people have become known as the 'Singingest soldiers' the world has ever known. Most notable on this recording is the addition of Gary Stott on Fiddle & Vocals. He joined the group in 1989. On this recording is also added mandolin & concertina.

Marching on to Richmond ~ De Boatman's Dance ~ The Vacant Chair ~ Johny Fill Up the Bowl ~ Rose of Alabama ~ Homespun Dress ~ Planxty Irwin ~ Civil War Rifleman ~ The Girls at Home ~ Minstrel Boy to the War is Gone ~ Margaret's Waltz ~ Dixie's Land (Dixie) ~ Ashoken Farewell ~ My Old Kentucky Home / Auld Lang Syne Medley.

Grand Military Ball

Volume 3, copyright 1993, 60 minutes
Dances and Balls were a favorite pastime of the generation of the 1860's. Whether in a formal setting or at a barn raising, people loved to dance. Favorites were the reels, waltzes, schottisches, polkas and variations of each. Here we have assembled the favorites of representative dance tunes. To the best of our knowledge, they are all period dance tunes. It is very representative of the music we perform at period military balls. This is the only tape where tehre are no vocals; it is totally instrumental. It consists of fingerstyle guitar, clawhammer/minstrel style banjo, fiddles and concertina.
